When I was a librarian one of my favourite things to do was create book displays. I was in charge of school aged programming and that meant I pretty much had free reign over the juniors section. Around the holidays I was always surprised at just how many Christmas themed chapter books for kids there are out there!

Holiday and Christmas Chapter Books Kids Will Love

Here are some of my favourite recommendations. Since they’re for kids, I would say most books fit within the age 6-12 range, with a few that might be enjoyed by teens and adults too. They’re great if you’re doing the 4 gift Christmas and looking for something to read or just want to get kids in the holiday spirit.

Robyn the Christmas Party Fairy (Rainbow Magic Special Edition)

Robyn the Christmas Party Fairy

Kids love this series of books, and for good reason. There’s a fairy for basically anything! This is one of a couple Christmas books in the series, and is definitely a cute Christmas themed chapter book for kids.

A Little House Christmas Treasury: Festive Holiday Stories: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids

A Little House Christmas Treasury: Festive Holiday Stories

I can’t not include a Little House on the Prairie Book! Somehow they’re still popular today. Which is great if you’re looking for something wholesome and traditional.

A Very Merry Christmas

A Very Merry Christmas

I love the Geronimo Stilton books, especially for reluctant readers. There’s plenty of pictures and they do cool things with fonts to keep it engaging. Plus the stories are actually interesting!

A Shiloh Christmas (The Shiloh Quartet)

A Shiloh Christmas

If your kid hasn’t read Shiloh keep in mind that this is the 4th book in the series. For fans (or dog lovers) though, this book is a great addition to your home library. It’s also one of the few on this list that are better for young middle grade (grade 5 and 6) kids rather than elementary.

Happy Narwhalidays (A Narwhal and Jelly Book #5)

Happy Narwhalidays

You can hardly call this a chapter book but it’s definitely not a young children’s book either. The Narwhal books are so cute, so grab this Christmas version for your beginner readers!

The 12 Screams of Christmas (Goosebumps Most Wanted: Special Edition #2) (2)

The 12 Screams of Christmas

You can’t have Christmas themed chapter books for kids without including some of R.L. Stine’s work! If you have a kid who likes scary stuff, or one who doesn’t want to read Christmaassy Christmas chapter books this is a great choice.

Junie B., First Grader: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! (P.S. So Does May)

Junie B., First Grader: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells!

Another one for those emerging readers, Junie B. Jones is a hilarious first grader who’s always getting up to mischief. She’ll have to find her Christmas spirit in this book, which is tough when you’re paired with a secret Santa partner you don’t like.

Christmas After All: The Great Depression Diary of Minnie Swift, Indianapolis, Indiana 1932 (Dear America Series)

Christmas After All

Written like an 11 year old’s journal and set in 1932, this book is great for kids who are interested in history or for a Great Depression homeschool lesson. Christmas during those difficult times was a lot different than today.

A Bad Kitty Christmas: Includes Three Ready-to-Hang Ornaments!

A Bad Kitty Christmas

Part chapter book, part comic, Bad Kitty books are silly and fun for kids to read. What kind of trouble will Kitty get up to over the holidays?

A Christmas Carol (Bantam Classics)

A Christmas Carol

I would be lying if I said this wasn’t one of my all time favourite Christmas chapter books for kids (and adults). Although it’s better for middle grade and up, this classic story can really be enjoyed at any age. If you don’t know the story: Scrooge, an old and angry man, goes on a journey through past, present, and future on Christmas eve.

My Weird School Special: Deck the Halls, We're Off the Walls!: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids

My Weird School Special: Deck the Halls, We’re Off the Walls!

Part of the ‘My Weird School’ series, this book is perfect for younger elementary aged readers. This hilarious book is set after school at Christmastime. When everything goes wrong at the mall, the gang of heroes have to save the day – and Christmas!

The Magic Treehouse books are about kids who journey through time going on adventures. Part exciting story, part history lesson, this one takes the reader to Camelot – a fantasy place – for Christmas.

Father Christmas's Fake Beard

Father Christmas’s Fake Beard

Terry Pratchett is fantasy author who’s best known for his hilarious stories – and this is no exception. Geared towards middle grade readers (grades 5-7), it asks what would happen if Christmas was a little bit different this year.

Calendar Mysteries #12: December Dog

Even if they haven’t read the other months, this holiday edition of the Calendar Mysteries series is set in December. When the kids find a lost puppy on Christmas eve they set out to find who the owner is.

Krampus & The Thief of Christmas: A Christmas Novel

Krampus & The Thief of Christmas: A Christmas Novel

I’m not really one for scary books, but when it comes to getting kids reading you have to cater to their interests not yours. If yours are as obsessed with scary stuff as mine then they’ll love this version of the Krampus story that’s written to be scary (but not too scary) for kids.

The Girl Who Saved Christmas (Boy Called Christmas)

The Girl Who Saved Christmas

As Christmas magic dwindles in the north pole, Santa needs a certain little girl who help save Christmas. But the girl, who was sent to the workhouse after her mother fell ill, doesn’t really believe in magic anymore. This book is perfect for kids at that age where they’re starting to grow out of the Santa phase.

The Christmasaurus

The Christmasaurus

What kid doesn’t love dinosaurs? A long time ago an egg became frozen in the ice. Santa and the elves find it, and out hatches a dinosaur! Meanwhile, there’s a young boy out there who’s always wished for a dino of his own…

Stanley's Christmas Adventure (Flat Stanley)

Stanley’s Christmas Adventure (Flat Stanley)

An early grade classic, Flat Stanley is back on another adventure. When Santa’s feeling like kids just don’t appreciate Christmas anymore the elves contact Stanley’s family. He has to convince Santa that there are still good children in the world!

The Family Under the Bridge: A Newbery Honor Award Winner

The Family Under the Bridge

If you’re looking for heartwarming Newberry award winning Christmas themed books for kids, make sure The Family Under the Bridge is on your list. It’s about an older, single man who has no interest in being anything but alone. That is until he finds a trio of orphans under a bridge on Christmas eve.

Why Read Christmas Themed Chapter Books for Kids?

I think it’s important to keep kids’ reading interesting and topical. I know I like to read Christmas themed books around the holidays, so why not offer them for kids too? Many of these would also make great read-alouds for kids who are past that ‘picture book’ stage but still want to be read to.
