They take very little prep work, which I love. If you’re homeschooling, or just trying to occupy your kids, then definitely give this easy DIY a try.
Some days the simplest crafts, with the easiest supplies lead to the most fun, and most creative products. It’s not always easy to find a craft that all ages will enjoy together so take a break from the books and work and create some beautiful pieces.
Hang them up to add some spring or summer color to your homes.
How to Make These Watercolor Butterflies Craft For Kids
Supplies Needed:
Optional extras:
- Googly eyes
- Pipe cleaners
- Sparkles or gems if you really want to let the kids get creative
How to Make This Watercolor Butterflies Craft for Kids: Step by Step
Step 1 – Paint the Clothespins
First, have each child paint their clothespins. Since they’re made of wood, I find acrylic paint works the best. These will become the body of your watercolor butterfly.
Let it dry.
Step 2 – Color The Coffee Filter
While your paint dries, color the coffee filter with the markers. Try to fill in lots of color but don’t worry about the little ones who leave a bit of space because the water will also transfer the ink.
Step 3 – Fill a Spray Bottle and Spray
Once the coloring is done take the spray bottle and spray the filter with water. Watch as the colors start to flow. This is a great opportunity to talk about color mixing , or incorporate some science chats about the process.
Now is time to let them dry.
Step 4 – Add the Clothespin
Once your coffee filters have dried you can gather the side to the center and clip on the clothespin. Then fan out your filter to make your beautiful butterfly.
