I personally think everyone needs a hobby. They don’t need to necessarily be anything crazy, but having something that you do that’s just for you is really nice. Especially if you’re a full time mother! These are the best hobby ideas for stay at home moms so that you can get some you time while still taking care of your family.
There’s a lot of great hobbies out there, but some aren’t compatible for kids. Personally, I love dancing – but the dance studio that I’d like to attend is about an hour away and it makes taking classes impossible. I have other hobbies, though, like blogging and playing video games.
Choosing hobby ideas for stay at home moms
When you’re choosing hobby ideas for stay at home moms, you need something that can be done either when the kids are around or once they go to bed. You probably also don’t want to start a hobby that costs too much money, or one that takes up a lot of space in your home.
These SAHM hobby ideas are perfect for those reasons. Even if you’re new to hobbies, seriously consider giving one a shot!
Yoga
Yoga is one of my favourite activities to do at home. Although taking classes is nice, there’s plenty of guided yoga lessons online or on YouTube. Not only does yoga help you relax and recharge, it also gives you a workout too. While it might not be the solution to drop the baby weight on its own, you’ll definitely be stronger and healthier doing it.
The best part is you really need minimal accessories to do this one. If you don’t already own a pair of yoga pants as a stay at home mom I applaud you! But now’s the time to get them. Otherwise just a yoga mat will do.
Knitting/Crocheting
If you don’t already know how to do these crafts then there is a bit of a learning curve. But, like with everything, there’s great tutorials online. Or ask a family member to show you if you can.
Both knitting and crocheting give you something to do in the evenings or during nap time that’s cathartic and quiet. The best part? At the end you’ll actually have something to show for it. You can make things for yourself and your family, gifts, or even sell your work.
Again, the list is pretty minimal. All you need are knitting needles or a crochet hook, some yarn, and a pattern. They all tuck away nicely and can be picked up for short times, too.
Baking
If you can learn to enjoy baking as a stay at home mom your life will be so much better. Being able to bake things for the kids’ lunches, homemade bread, or your own birthday cakes can not only save you money but kids love it too.
As a hobby, try and explore different recipes and push yourself in the kitchen. Make those fancy cakes, those cream filled pastries, or artisan breads.
Accessories for this one will vary depending on what you want to make, but you can get started pretty inexpensively. Ingredients do sometimes have high price tags, but at least you’ll have something to enjoy when you’re done!
Writing/Journaling
I don’t mean blogging (that’s later). This is actual pen on paper journaling or creative writing! Personally, I’m a fan of guided journals and gratitude journals, but you can really fill in anything you want. Even a blank notebook will work!
It’s very therapeutic to write about your day. So maybe consider making journaling part of your daily habits!
If general writing is more your thing, I strongly suggest getting a writing book. There’s a few, but personally I like “642 things to write about.” I actually own it myself.
Reading
If you can’t write, how about reading? This is yet another personal hobby of mine. It’s even better if you can join a book club and get out of the house once a month. Some even meet online! Perfect for a busy stay at home mom’s schedule.
As SAHMs we often don’t have time to read, but it is possible to make time here and there. Before bed is a great time, but it’s also nice to pick up a book while the kids are running around outside too.
My partner recently bought me an Amazon Kindle with the Kindle Unlimited so I could read easier. Although I prefer paper books, it’s nice that it’s small and portable… And also waterproof for summer.
Puzzles or Sticker Mosaics
I love puzzles but they’re very hard to do with kids. I had one sitting on the coffee table not too long ago and my 5 year old destroyed it. Sigh. You’d think he’d outgrown that stuff by now! Anyway, instead, I choose puzzle books. I recently picked up a Sherlock Holmes Puzzle Book, but there’s all kinds of puzzle books out there that stay at home moms can do.
On the other hand, I have a friend who loves doing adult sticker mosaics. They’re great for SAHMs because everything is self contained and you don’t need to worry about the pieces getting lost or falling out of place. There’s a few different types of these books out there, but the paint by stickers books are really cool.
Gardening
If you’re lucky enough to have the space, then definitely consider planting a vegetable garden. Not only is it a great hobby (which will get you outside in the summer) but you get food that your family can enjoy out of it. I find that with our garden, my kids are way more willing to try and eat veggies than if we buy them in the store.
If growing food isn’t your thing, flower beds are also great. Either way, it’s a great hobby for moms that kids can help with too. Or that you can do while supervising them in the yard.
For those without outdoor space, indoor gardening or even just houseplants are nice too.
Blogging
This is a personal favourite of mine, as probably guessed. It’s pretty easy to start a blog and get your wisdom online and it doesn’t cost very much money. Blogging is how I earn extra money at home as a stay at home mom, too.
If you have a lot of ideas, and a little tech know how, you can make it happen.
