Bring the Outside in With Pumpkins

This is honestly one of my favourite decorating tricks for the fall. While it fits with basically any decorating style, nothing says farm (and farmhouse) like decorating with something you grew yourself.

Even if you don’t have a garden that grows gourds you can still pick them up at most grocery stores in the fall for the same look. Or consider buying from a local farm instead!

Hang a Fall Wreath

Can you even call your home a modern farmhouse if you don’t have a wreath on the door? Real ones look amazing, but a fake one will do just fine. Or you could even consider making your own!

If You Add Halloween Items, Keep it Fun and Not Scary

Keep your farmhouse Halloween decorating simple

Some people love to have a scary Halloween, but farmhouse fall decorating should be more about the fall colours and harvest than scaring neighbourhood children.

Take a DIY Approach to Your Farmhouse Fall Decorating

I personally think homemade fabric pumpkins are just the cutest thing ever. I also have a set a of 2 x 4 pumpkins in my own home, which are painted in a bunch of orange and white patterns.

Farmers use everything they have, and upcycled decorating is a huge part of the modern farmhouse style. Incorporate that into your fall décor this year to really reflect your personal style while keeping trendy.

Use Hay Bales in Your Farmhouse Fall Porch Decor

You’re probably going to have to pay for them, but a hay bale can really add that country touch to your home – even if you live in the city. Since the fall is hay baling season on farms they’re readily available to purchase.

Take Advantage of Existing Flower Beds

Why over complicate things? To give your existing flower beds that fall feel, add some cute Halloween decorations to them. This works best in warmer climates, of course (by the time Halloween rolls around on the Canadian prairies we already have snow on the ground!) but it’s too cute not to share.

Dress up Your Fireplace Mantel for Fall With Farmhouse Decorations

Modern Farmhouse Fall Décor Ideas for your fireplace mantle

Every good farmhouse needs a fireplace to keep warm in the winter. If you’re lucky enough to have one in your home, then dressing it up for the fall season is a great way to make the living room ‘pop’ with fall spirit.

My advice for mantle decorating is to keep it simple. Add a few key pieces on top, and use upcycled pieces (like the window in this picture) to give it some extra height.

Focus on the Porch Decor

The modern farmhouse design is all about making tradition pop. If you have a large front porch (or even a small one), you can really dress up your home by continuing your fall decorating outside.

Natural elements like hay bales, gourds, bunches of dried stalks, and corn all work well outside and give your home a fall farmhouse feel without doing too much.

Pick a Fall Great Welcome Mat

I absolutely love welcome mats because they create a big impact on the space, but are so inexpensive and easy to find. If you have a small porch, or don’t have a lot of money to invest into your outdoor decorating, then it’s a perfect solution. Plus not too many decorations are as practical as this one!

Use Farmhouse Style Signs With Fall Themes

Signs, especially rustic wooden signs, are one of the classic modern farmhouse decor ideas. You can literally put them anywhere (and everywhere) and they’ll look great.

Dollar Tree actually sells really cute signs, and DIY options or craft sales are always great. But, since there so popular, you can also pick up cute signs just about anywhere.

Make Your Home Smell Like Fall

The best scents for fall

It’s great if your house looks like fall, but even better when it smells like fall. Don’t be shy about bringing in those fall scents as you put our your autumn decorations. Cinnamon, Vanilla, Pumpkin Spice, and Apple Pie are popular fall smells that you can look for.

Ways to bring fall scents into the home:
