When I’m home with the kids I basically start running from the time I get up. It’s wonderful, chaotic work and I love it but the afternoon will roll around and I’ll still be in my pjs. Or sometimes I’ll shower and throw on some comfy clothes. I definitely don’t get dressed every day! But I should start.

Why Stay at Home Moms Should Get Dressed Every Day

Have you ever heard the expression ‘dress for the job you want’? Guess what, that applies to people working at home too. Work and home moms and stay at home moms both have important jobs to do. Just because we don’t get up and go somewhere doesn’t mean we aren’t at work.

I get it, one of the big work perks of being a stay at home mom is that you can spend all day in your pyjamas. That’s fine – once in a while. If you start making a habit of it that’s where things get dicey.

I know when I get dressed it makes me feel so much better about myself! I’m more productive, I feel more like a real person and not just a mom, and it means that if someone drops by unannounced I’m not going to be quite so embarrassed.

What do I mean by getting dressed?

It’s not just throwing on your lounge wear. That kind of defeats the purpose. First of all, you have to actually get dressed. Not in full business attire but at least something that looks nice. Something you’d be happy to have someone see you in.

Put you hair up or style it a bit. Nothing crazy! It’s also nice to throw on some inexpensive, low maintenance jewellery like a chunky necklace. Or if you have a teething baby one of those teething necklaces.

Here’s some of the reasons why moms should get dressed every day:

  1. It makes you feel better about yourself.
  2. You’re more likely to say yes to company which help with mood and loneliness.
  3. If you’re working, you feel more professional.
  4. The delivery guy won’t see you in your pyjamas… Again…
  5. You have an official “start” to your day.
  6. Helps you hold yourself to a certain standard of professionalism.
  7. It’s easier to get out of the house and you’re more likely to go, improving your mood.
  8. You’re less likely to over eat wearing fitted pants than in stretchy clothing.
  9. You get to wear those clothes you bought but only wear when you go out which is not enough.
  10. Helps you break up your days so they don’t run together and feel as if you haven’t ever had a break or stopped.
  11. Can help with minor depression or ‘the blues’.
  12. Even on a very unproductive day can help the “I did nothing at all” attitude.
  13. Gives you an excuse to buy more clothes.
  14. You’re ready for the unexpected – visitors, errands, etc.
  15. You feel more clean.
  16. It’s a few minutes you can take to focus on just yourself before giving your all to other people or work.
  17. You never know who you might run into at the grocery store, don’t be caught in sweats.
  18. You can express yourself via clothing and feel more like you.
  19. You’ll feel more confident in yourself which will trickle down to everything you do.
  20. You don’t have to do it for them but your spouse will appreciate it.

Hopefully you’re convinced to giving getting dressed daily a try. Try it for 21 days (that’s how long it takes to form a habit) and see how you feel after that. 10 minutes a day could change your life! If you’re still in pjs or loungewear get dressed right now.

    I love reason #8 and 15!!!!
Well said, I for sure don’t eat as much when I’m not in my stretchiest pants (let’s face it, they are all some sort of stretchy🤷🏻‍♀️) and totally feel clean, which makes me feel better about myself!!!
