It’s not a well kept secret that I love playing board games. Whether it’s one on one with my partner, family game night with the kids, or a group get together nothing makes me happier than getting games of any kind to the table. To share that love with others I love giving game night gift baskets; here’s some great ideas so you can too.
A game night gift basket is a great idea for a holiday group gift, especially as Christmas gifts for extended family like your siblings and their kids, cousins, and so on. They’re also handy to give to employees, clients or customers, or anyone who you want to give a “generic” gift most people will love but still feels personal.
I also love these as couples gifts for a fun date night idea. Game night gift baskets for couples are my go to for smaller events like engagement or anniversary parties where you want to get something thoughtful without breaking the bank.
Of course, these game night gift basket ideas would be perfect for couples and families for any occasion, including birthdays, too!

Ideas for What to Put in a Game Night Gift Basket
If you’re trying a DIY approach to your game night gift basket you might be wondering what’s best to put inside. Of course, those choices are part of the personalization! After all, the best part of making your own gift basket is tailoring it specifically for the recipient.
For that reason, I urge you to use these tips alongside your own judgement to decide what you feel is best for the family or couple.
A Board Game
You have a few options when it comes to board games for gift baskets. Since this is the main event it has to be something good.
The best board game for a gift basket will depend on:
- Age and ability (especially with kids/families)
- Tolerance for board games (do they enjoy board games or would they like something like Jenga or Cards Against Humanity?)
- Their existing collection (most people already own basic games like Yahtzee and Monopoly)
- Your budget (board game prices vary wildly)
- Personal preferences (do you know them to be someone who loves classic games, card games, etc)
- Number of players (make sure the games are suitable for the number of people you expect to be playing)
A lot of pre-made game night gift baskets include card games because they’re inexpensive, quick to learn, family-friendly, and easy to add to the basket.
Speaking as a gamer, I try and avoid snacks that are going to be too messy to keep my board games in good condition. Most candy is probably fine, but I would avoid anything that leaves too much residue on the hands like sour candy. Especially when there are kids involved!
The same goes for chocolate; if you think kids will be messy with it, skip it.
One thing I do suggest is mixing sweet and savory snacks. No everyone wants to eat junk food while playing board games. Instead, consider nuts, dried fruit, beef jerky, specialty crackers/chips, and other “snack” food that isn’t quite as unhealthy.
The sky’s the limit in this department. There are so many unique board game accessories out there that can easily be added to a gift basket to up the “wow” factor. I’ve included a few at the bottom of this page (under the premade game night gift basket ideas) like a candle and decoration as inspiration, but you can really add anything.
Some fun board game themed basket filler ideas:
- Decorations for the home
- Christmas tree ornaments
- “Upgrades” for the included game like trays, inserts, better pieces, expansion, etc
- Generic board game items like dice (including DnD dice)
- Small containers or bags to organize the game pieces
- Cozy items for a night in (eg. socks)
- Game themed t-shirts and other apparel
You have to use something as your gift basket base! I’m a big fan of making this practical whenever I assemble a gift basket and here is no exception. I love the idea of using a large popcorn or snack bowl to hold everything. Otherwise, something practical like a bin or basket that can be used to store board games (or accessories) is always welcome.
Bonus points if you personalize the container!
The Best Pre-Made Game Night Gift Basket Ideas for Families
I’m a big fan of personalized gift ideas and this family game night gift box is no exception. Everyone gets their own bowl for snacks that they can enjoy while you play one of the included family-friendly games together.
This is such a cute Christmas eve box idea! There’s a great balance of delicious movie night snacks including popcorn (which can be placed in the tub that’s being used as the gift basket base). There’s a also a couple fun family games you can enjoy together before the movie. When it comes to customization , you can choose whether or not to have the film included, and you can also have this game night gift basket personalized.
This is a cute on its own, as a stocking stuffer, or as an addition to a larger game themed gift basket.
Order online and have this game night care package shipped to the recipient! It comes with a variety of delicious snacks and some traditional games like Yahtzee and cards. Love this as a long distance gift idea.
There isn’t much in this game themed care package but it’s just the right size to send to someone as a gift. They’ll get two games, a deck of cards, an array of snacks, and some microwave popcorn at a pretty affordable price.
I love, love, love this family game night box! You can buy it on its own or purchase it pre-filled with a selection of family game inspired night gifts.
I like this gift basket because it comes with something other than the typical popcorn. It includes tasty snacks (with enough for everyone) and some fun popular games like Jenga and Uno.
Fun and Unique Date Night Board Game Gift Baskets for Couples
This fun gift basket has a bit of everything. There base is a large popcorn bowl and you get plenty of snacks (including popcorn) to fill it with and share. There’s a couple of classic games, and an Amazon gift card you can use to rent a movie. Super fun date night gift idea!
This could be fun for an individual but I think it would make an exceptional date night idea. It comes with everything you need to solve a murder including case files, newspaper clippings, and other clues. So. Much. Fun!
I love that this mini date night in gift box doesn’t come with a bunch of traditional candy or board games. Instead you get some nice vanilla rum flavored cashews, beef jerky, and a small jar of specialty treats. The included game, EyeSea, is easy enough for beginners but probably something the couple hasn’t played yet – a perfect idea for date night!
This is the larger version of the mini gift box (above). Another great couple gift, this one includes a different selection of premium sweet and savory drinks, two different games, and a tote bag.
This is a super cute idea! Instead of a random selection of gifts you can give a couple this cute deep sea themed gift box. It’s a custom made date-night adventure board game that’s full of fun accessories to help you play. Give it on its own, or add this unique gift to a larger game night gift basket.
Although I think this was made for other reasons, this gift basket is fun for those winter months when you can’t get outside as much as you’d like – especially as a couple. Some of the games work for families, but I think the selection is great for two players (especially since chess is included) so I felt this would be a super fun option for date night. Plenty of options to play again and again!

This is another cute accessory to add to a family game night gift basket or to give to gaming fans. Pair it with some treats and jars (like in the picture) for a fun game themed tray.
This is an amazing unique gift idea for a family, couple, or anyone who loves board games. Order your choice of size, then get it personalized for a special touch. This is a great way to store smaller board games, like card games, while having something that fits with your decor too.
